Edinburgh's Historic Skyline
Edinburgh is a wonderful historic city, and a must-see when visiting Scotland. Known as both “Auld Reekie” and the “Athens of the North”, it is the capital and second largest city of Scotland. Its streets are full of interesting architecture and incredible history. Some of our favourite things about Edinburgh include:
- Food. The city has the most bars and restaurants per capita than any other in the UK. From traditional Scottish food to modern cuisines such as Indian and Italian, Edinburgh has it all.
- Architecture. As you’ll see on many of the walks in the guide, Edinburgh’s Georgian architecture is well preserved and, at times, breathtaking.
- Outdoors. Edinburgh has such a good relationship with Mother Nature, which makes it the ideal choice for tourists that enjoy walking. From the idyllic pathways on the Water of Leith to scaling Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in the city, there are walking routes suitable for all fitness levels.
Wandering its streets is the best way to explore Edinburgh. This website has been set up to post interesting articles and resources on walking in Edinburgh, with particular emphasis on uncovering the history of the city. In conjunction with the new book published by Destinworld Publishing entitled Historic Walking Guides - Edinburgh, various walking tips and ideas are posted here, and we encourage you to comment and add your own experiences to these posts.
